The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a modest 1.14% increase in electricity rates across all consumer groups, effective October 1, 2025. However, water charges will remain unchanged during this period.
The adjustment stems from PURC’s regular tariff review process, which evaluates economic indicators that influence the cost of utility services. These factors include the exchange rate between the Ghanaian cedi and the US dollar, inflation trends, fuel costs particularly natural gas and the mix of energy sources used for power generation.
To determine the new rates, PURC considered a projected exchange rate of GHS12.3715 per US dollar, accounting for a shortfall of GHS0.3980 from the previous quarter.
It also factored in an annual inflation rate of 12.43% and an average natural gas cost of $7.7134 per MMBtu. The expected energy mix remains heavily reliant on thermal sources (71.20%) with hydro contributing 28.80%.
The Commission emphasized that the tariff revision is essential to preserve the real value of utility charges and ensure that service providers remain financially viable. This, it said, is key to maintaining consistent electricity and water supply.
PURC also reassured the public that it will continue to oversee utility companies to uphold service standards and deliver value for money.
